I have a Lexmark Optra S 1855 which I connected to the network via ethernet to an Apple Airport Extreme using a Lexmark Ethernet Network Card.
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger printed fine with this printer via Appletalk. It printed fine also via USB connection.
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard would also not recognize the printer via direct USB connection. But at least it could recognize it via Appletalk and so printing was OK using a generic printer driver. Lexmark never provided updated drivers for it.
Mac OS X 10.6 Show Leopard killed off Appletalk. There no longer is Appletalk - unfortunately. Thus the Lexmark Optra S 1855 could not be automatically located via Print & Fax preferences. The Lexmark Optra S Printers are Appletalk compatible but are so old that they are also not recognized by Bonjour. What I had to do is locate the IP address of the printer using Network Utility (Netstat>Display Routing Table Information). My printer's address was 192.168.1.2. In Print & Fax preferences, I selected Add Printer, selected the IP tab, entered 192.168.1.2 in the Address, selected the generic PostScript Printer driver, then selected Add.
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard does provide better printer drivers that do support the Optra S 1855. Thus it can now connect and print via directed USB Printing.
In your case, I don't know if it would work as a USB Printer connected via Airport or Time Machine. But it can work connected directly (using a USB-Parallel printer cord adapter) or via network ethernet card (which you can buy via EBay).
